Oskaloosa, Ia., Jan. 1. (Special.) - Jack Atchison, a laborer, lost his life and the Oskaloosa Manufacturig company sustained a $10,000 loss in the destruction of their down town buggy repository this morning. Boiling Stuff Starts Blaze Two Companions Escape But Smoke Cuts Off Exit. Body Found in Ruins of Buggy Repository Which Was Destroyed With Loss of $10,000. Oskaloosa, Ia., Jan. 1 - Special: John Atchison, a laborer, aged 40 years, lost his life in a fire this morning that ruined the buggy respository and salesroom of the 'Oskaloosa Manufacturing company. The property loss will be between $8,000 and $10,000. The loss is covered by insurance. Jack Atchison, Bryan Ballard and James Green were engaged in putting fresh tar on the roof of the building. They were heating the tar in buckets on a small stove and taking it up through a trap door to the roof. Suddenly a little tar boiled over on the stove, took fire and communicated the flames at once to the bucket. Ballard, who was nearest to the stove, had the flames fairly in hand, when a second bucket took fire and went off with an explosion throwing the burning tar in all directions. Calling to his companions to get out he had to run with all his might to saftety. Green followed Ballard, but Atchison it seems was choked by the dense funes and the heavy smoke cut off sight of the exit. Several in the crowd said they had seen him on the street, but the stories were unfounded, for when the flames had benn extinguished firemen found the lifeless and badly burned body lying between some buggies that had not been taken out of the crates.
