- Mary Joy Sayres, age 85, of Knox City, MO, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017, in Boone Hospital in Columbia, MO. She was born August 22, 1931, in Knox City, MO, the daughter of Howard McConnell and Nellie Leona Pulse Nicol. She was united in marriage to Ercel Dowayne Sayres on January 26, 1954, in the Chapel at Camp Pendleton, CA and he preceded her in death on March 14, 2006. Mrs. Sayres was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Charles and John Will Nicol, and a sister Sandra Browning.
Surviving are two children, Cheryl Cook of Kirksville, MO and Ronald (Brenda) Sayres of Knox City, MO, one sister Judy (Ernest) Rolfe of Ontario, Canada, a sister-in-law Judy Nicol of Knox City, MO, a brother-in-law James Browning of Edina, MO, four grandchildren Nikki and husband Spencer Hines, Derek Sayres and wife Lorin, Laci Cook, and Marquita Sayres, great grandchildren, Alexis, Gavin and Olivia Sayres, Maya McKiver, Clara Russell, Grant and Brooklyn Joy Hines and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many good neighbors and friends.
Mary Joy received her education in Knox County and attended Missouri State Teachers College, receiving a teaching degree and taught for several years in a one room rural country school.
Mary Joy and her husband resided in Knox City most of their life. She was always looking to get and give hugs. She was a seamstress and loved traveling to Canada, Hawaii, New Orleans and Nashville. She loved nature and taught her grandkids to enjoy sunrises and bird calls. At the age of 85 she enjoyed being able to attend an Alan Jackson concert in Moline, IL. Mary Joy was a 60 plus year member of Colony Eastern Star and a member of Knox City Christian Church.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2016, in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO. Reverend Sandy Browning and Reverend Dewayne Wellborn will officiate the services. Burial will be in Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville, MO.
Music will be provided by Gary Fagan. Musical selections will be "Go Rest High On That Mountain", "Sitting At The Feet Of Jesus" and "I want to Stroll Over Heaven With You".
Casket bearers will be David Browning, Michael Browning, Ron Smith, Jason Rolfe, Todd Goodwin, Joe Nicol, Rick Goodson, Wade Goodson, Keith Pulse and Wayne Rudd.
Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2016, with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO.
