      Waino H. Walkama, 83, of Makinen, died Monday, Nov. 4, 1996, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center. He was born March 31, 1913, to Henry and Ida (Makela) Walkama in Makinen. He grew up on the family farm in Makinen. He graduated from high school in Bisbee, Ariz., class of 1931. He moved back to Makinen in 1931, where he worked in the CCC camps at Sullivan Lake for 4 1/2 years. On Aug. 14, 1937, he married Vienna Simola in Duluth. Following marriage, the couple lived in Makinen, where they operated the family farm. In 1961, he began work as an operating engineer, retiring in 1976. He was a member of Operating Engineers Union Local 49, the Makinen Senior Citizens, and was the presiden of the Meal Producers Union. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Eino, and Arnie and Howard in infancy; a granddaughter, Don Renee Trenholm; a grandson, Brian Tapio; and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Vienna of Makinen; four daughters, Lucille Carlson of Ely, Elsie (Melvyn) Tapio of Coon Rapids, Minn.; Christine (Don) Trenholm of Makinen, and Donna (Emil) Jalonen of White Bear Lake, Minn.; six grandchildren, one brother, Wilho (Edith) Walkama of Aurora; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation: One hour prior to the 1 p.m. funeral services Friday at the Palo Congreagational Church. The Rev. Randy Melhus will officiate. Arrangements are by Range Funeral Home - Virginia.
