The rapidly thinning ranks of Amherst's pioneer residents suffered another loss this week in the death of William Wilson. After an illness of only one week, Mr. Wilson died Friday night, December 30. (1899)
William Wilson was born in the state of Pennsylvania in February, 1825, and was now in the 74th year of his age. A man of robust health and of good business qualifications, he became a very prominent citizen of Amherst. Year after year his neightbors and friends honored him with official position among them, giving him, for many terms in succession, the highest office in the power of his townsmen to bestow, the chairmanship of the town board of supervisors. He satisfactorily administered all the affairs of the town, and was conscientious and careful in representing the sentiment of his constituents while he was serving them on the county board.
He came to Amherst in the fall of 1853, when it consisted of only a few families scattered about in a wilderness. Ever since that time he has taken a deep interest in all affairs of the town and in her citizens, helping her and them whenever he could, by his kindly deeds or words of counsel.
In the year 1857, he became on of the members of a Methodist society formed by Rev. Elmore Yocum. His energy and means were heartily given to establish and build up the society. Mr. Wilson was a strong advocate of temperance, and used his best endeavors to suppress the evil traffic. He was always a friend to the poor, both as a public and private citizen.
Though the summons to leave this life came suddenly, he was prepared. His hope and trust, in his last hours of time, was in his savior. His house was in order, and the master found him ready to enter eternity and joy.
He leaves a family of five sons and two daughters and a wife who has helped him bear the burden of life and shared with him its joys for nearly fifty years. The children were planning in a few months to celebrate their golden wedding.
The children are Robert and Thomas, of Knowlton; Estel, of Park Falls; Richard and Henry, of the this town, and Mrs. C. F. Haertel and Mrs. Mary Fowlie, also of this village. All of them were present at the funeral.
The services were held Tuesday afternoon, at the Town Hall, conducted by Rev. Wm. Moyle. The burial was at Greenwood cemetery. J.J. Nelson, C.N. Fenton, S. C. Swenson, R.R. Fryar, C.P. Sommers, and P.N. Peterson acted as pallbearers. The funeral was very largely attended, and much regret expressed in having to part with one whom young and old alike highly respected.

      Stevens Point Journal - 7 Jan 1899
Died at his residence in this village Friday December 30 of rhuematism of the heart, Hon. William Wilson in the 74th year of his age. The above announces the taking from us of one of our oldest residents and most highly esteemed citizen, friend, and neighbor. Mr. Wilson came to Amherst in 1853 and has seen the wilderness of that day develop into the rich and prosperous community of the present. He was a land mark and one that will be greatly missed, probably as much if not more than anyone in our midst. His history is written in the records of the town and county and is a most honorable one. No one can ever say that Mr. Wilson knowingly did him wrong in act or word. He leaves a wife, five sons and two daughters, all married and with homes of their own, except one daughter who lives at home. He was buried on Tuesday, followed to the grave by his mourning friends an drelatives from near and far.
"Our businessmen showed their esteem for Mr. Wilson and family by closing their businesses during the funeral."
"The funeral of Hon. William Wilson was the largest ever seen in this village."

      Stevens Point Journal - 3 Jan 1900
William Wilson, one of the oldest residents of Amherst, died very suddenly at Amherst at 11:20 o'clock. Mr. Wilson has been troubled for years with rhuematism but was in his usual state of health up until 10 o'clock Friday evening when he began to feel ill and died in a little over and hour. The funeral was held this afternoon. Those who attended from this city were A.M. Nelson, Mrs. L.A. Pomeroy, and Mrs. G.A. Manthey.
