      Pioneer Passes Away In The Ninety-third Year Of Her Age

      Mrs. Phoebe Wilson, widow of the late William Wilson, the last of the original settlers on the land on and near where the village of Amherst is located, passed awasy at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. F. Haertel, 218 Mill street, at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Wilson had been in failing health, due to old age, for a little upwards of a year and had been confined to her bed at the home of her daughter, since about the last of August. Notwithstanding her advanced years the deceased retained her faculties, with the exception of her speech which was lost about three days agao, up to the time of her death.
      Phoebe Fleming was born in Trenton, N.J. On December 27, 1824, and was the last member of a family of seven children. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. THomas Fleming, have long since passed to the great beyond. On June 8, 1850, at Southport, N.Y. she was united in marriage to William Wilson. In the spring of 1853 they removed to Wisconsin and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson located with other well known families, the Flemings, Allens, and Wilmots, on a farm near Amherst, upon which Mrs. Wilson resided up to the time of her removal to this city. Mr. Wilson passed away on December 30, 1898. The first break in the family of her children occured in the death of Mrs. Foley, which took place last June. The surviving children are Robert and Thomas Wilson of this city, Estile, Ashland, Richard and Henry, Amherst, and Mrs. C. F. Haertel of this city. She also leaves seventeen grandchildren and twenty-nine grea grandchildren.
      Mrs. Wilson was a devout member of the Methodist church and Rev. Gelling pastor of the Methodist church of Amherst, of whom whe was very fond, will conduct a short prayer service at the Haertel home in this city at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, after which the remains will be taken to Amherst where services will be held in the church at 3 o'clock, interment following in the village cemetery.

      LAST ORIGINAL SETTLER DIES Came to Amherst When It Was But A Wilderness

      Many people in the village and vicinity will feel sincere regret over the death of Mrs. Phoebe Wilson who expired at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.F. Haertel at 218 Mill Street Stevens Point, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 P.M.,(14 May 1916) after a long illness of nearly a year. Mrs. Wilson had been a resident of Amherst village for over 62 years, previous to April 5 1915, when she was forced to give up her home here and move to Stevens Point, in company with her daughter, Mrs. Mary Fowlie, on account of poor health of both Mrs. Wilson and her daughter.
      Phoebe Fleming was born at Trenton, NY (s/b NJ) Dec., 7, 1824 the daughter of Thomas and Rachel Fleming. On the 8th day of June 1850, she was married to William Wilson at Elmira, NY by Rev. Moses Crow. In the fall of 1853 they came to Wisconsin and for a year or two lived at the pinery near Knowlton and vicinity. A little later they came to Amherst, Wis. where a brother of Mrs. Wilson; Wm. V. Fleming had taken up a large section of land, which he subdivided with his sisters and one brother, making them adjoining property. These sisters were Mrs. Alanson Ryerson, Mrs. Rueben Thomson, Mrs. Wm. Rice, Mrs. Robert Wilson and one brother Benjamin Fleming, all deceased.
      Mr. Wilson passed away Dec. 30, 1898. Her immediate family consisted of five sons and one daughter; Robert, Thomas, and Mrs. C.F. Haertel of Stevens Point, Estile of Ashland, Richard and Henry of the village. One daughter, Mrs. Mary Fowlie passed away June 8, 1915.
      The body was brought to Amherst Wednesday afternoon on No. 12 Soo passenger and taken to the M.E. church where services were held. She has been a devoted member of the M.E. church since but a child. The Interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery in the family lot. Rev. J.J. Gelling officiating.

      The body of Mrs. Phoebe Wilson, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. F. Haertel, in Stevens Point Sunday afternoon, and whose obituary has been given else-where in the Journal, was brought to the village on Soo passenger train No. 12, Wednesday afternoon and taken to the M.E. church where services were held by Rev. J.J. Gelling. The church was beautifully decorated in white and lavender bunting with cut flowers. Songs were sung by Mrs. B. Harvey and Miss Virginia Mason, with Mrs. A.P. Een accompanist. The internment was made in Greenwood cemetery in the Wilson lot. The acting pallbearers at Stevens Point were her sons Robert, Thomas, Richard and Henry, C.F. Haertel, a son-in-law and Wm. H. Flowlie, a grandson. Those who acted in the same capacity at Amherst were chosen from the friends and neighbors of the deceased: P.N. Peterson, C.N. Fenton, A. P. Een, John Van Skiver, Burton Harvey and Geo. Smith. The flower arrangements were in charge of Mesdames L.A. Pomeroy, C.n. Fenton, C.M. Katos, and Miss Cora..
