12502 | Winona Republican-Herald ~ 26 Aug 1948 ~ Page 3 Winonan Breaks Neck in Dive; Condition Critical Robert Miller, 23, 403 West Broadway, is in critical condition today at the Winona Genearl hospital after breaking his neck in a dive in shallow water Wednesday afternoon. Miller was swimming in a sandpit near the Madison Silo Company in the far West End of the city. Miller is paralyzed from the shoulders down. He had a high temperature yesterday. His neck is broken in two places and thise is a possibility that he has a skull fracture. He cannot be moved to have X-rays taken, his family said today. Miller was injured about 2:30 p.m. when he dived over a companion and his head struck bottom. He was rushed by ambulance to Winona General hospital. Monday Funeral services for Robert Oakley Millr, 23-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Oakley Miller, 403 West Broadway, who died at the Winona General hospital Friday as a result of injuries he received Wednesday when he dove into a West End sandpit, will be held at the Breitlow Funeral home Monday at 2 p.m. the Rev. James Calvin Hill officiating. An American Legion service will be held at the Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call at the Breitlow Funeral home Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Born in Winona October 15, 1924, Robert attended the Jefferson and Madison grade schools and the Winona Junior High school. After graduating from a welding course at the NYA school in Winona, Mr. Miller worked in the shipyards at Sausalito, Calif., from 1942 until he was inducted into the Army at San Francisco on April 17, 1943. He served with the 155th Engineer Battalion at Camp Cook, Calif., and Sheppard Field, Texas, until October, 1943, whe he enrolled as an aviation cadet at Pullman, Wash. In January, 1944, he was transferred to the 1145th Engineers group at Camp Cook, Calif., and March 18 he joined the W.P.R.C. Casual Company at Camp White, Ore., where he stayed until April 15, 1944. He was transferred to Camp Claiborne, La., and served there with a training regiment wuntil he received an honorable medical discharge on March 6, 1945. He has been employed by the National Scale Company, Rochester, for the past year servicing amusement machines in Winona. He is a member of the American Legion post, the Degree of Honor Protective association and the Left Hander's club. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Miller, and two brothers, WIlliam S. Miller, a radio engineer at Rose City, North Little Rock, Arkansas, and Alfred, who is in the Army Transport service now in the Near East, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Sterbenz. | MILLER, Robert Oakley (I7595)

She had been ill since June. The Rev. H. H. Hunger will officiate. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 p.m. Monday until the hour of services. Burial will be in Hillside cemetery at St. Charles. Friends may call at the Wellman funeral home Saturday afternoon. Pallbearers will be Harold Michael, Ernest Anderson, Lloyd Mulholland, Lawrence Lewis, Prosper Linden and Herman Krenske. Mrs. Block, the former Laura Katherine Yackel, was born March 2, 1893, in Winona, youngest daughter of Henry and Adelina Graf Yackel. She was married June 28, 1917, and the couple lived in Lewiston since. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical church and was active in the Ladies Aid. She was a charter member of the Auxiliary of American Legion post No. 90, and received a certificate of meriterious service from the American Red Cross for work during World War II. Noble, resident here for nearly half a century, died suddenly this morning a 8:30 while eating breakfast at the Arcade restaurant. Death was caused by an acute heart attack. Mr. Noble, who was 83 years old last month, had been in good health for his age. When he was suddenly taken ill this morning, his son was called and arrived a short time before his death. Born at Carlisle, Minn., March 24, 1848, Mr. Noble came to Winona in 1888. He was employed as a bookkeeper at the Botsford Lumber company until his retirement a few years ago. Survivors are one son, Robert A. Noble, Winona; one daughter, Wilhelmina (Mrs. J. J. Lahey) Minneapolis, and one sister, Miss Jennie Noble, Carlisle. Mrs. Noble died about 30 years ago. Mr. Noble had resided at 70 West Third street, in the Morgan block, for the last nine years. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. 12518 | Wisconsin State Journal, Madison, Wis. ~ Friday, February 17, 1950 ~ Page 1 Column 3 Former Evansville Woman Killed When Car, Train Collide Beloit -- Mrs. George McMahon, 51, Beloit, former Evansville resident, was killed Thursday when the car she was driving collided with a North Western "400" passenger train in Beloit. Her mother, Mrs. Peter Neitits, 79, who lived with Mrs. McMahon, and also a former Evansville resident, was seriously injured. She was taken to a Beloit hospital. The car skidded and struck the train, according to witnesses. Parts of the car and a warning signal were scattered for 75 feet down the track. It was Beloit's first traffic fatality of the year. Mrs. McMahon, the former Edna Clark, was born in Lone Rock. She moved to Evansville 43 years ago and moved to Beloit 25 years ago. Survivors include her husband, her mother, and a brother, Leo Albert Clark, Spokane, Wash. Funeral services will be held at Beloit Saturday morning. 12541 | Woman Killed, Others Hurt In Crash Near City Mrs. Lewis Peters, 43, Of Johnstown, Victim of Wreck Going To Church Accident Happens on Highway F Six Miles East of City; Several Other Wrecks A woman was fatally injured, a man is believed to be dying, and two persons were less seriously hurt in an automobile crash six miles east of Janesville on county trunk F, the Ruger avenue, road at 10:25 a.m. Sunday. Mrs. Lewis Peters, 43, town of Johnstown, died enroute to Mercy hospital in an ambulance. She suffered internal injuries and her head was smashed. The injured are: Iver Ystebo, 35, Boone farm county trunk highway A, fractured skull and internal injuries, may die. Mrs. Iver Ystebo, broken collar bone, side injured. Lewis Peters, injured shoulder. The cars driven by Peters and Ystebo crashed at an intersection of gravel roads while the Peters family was driving into Janesville to go to church. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Peters and a four-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ystebo escaped injury. «b»Pinned Under Car«/b» Fred Hampf, farmer who was standing in his corn field at the intersection when the cars crashed, said both cars were traveling about 35 miles an hour when they met, the Peters car going west on the Ruger avenue road and Ystebo car south on the other road. The Peters car turned over, throwing Mrs. Peters out and under the car. Hampf pulled her from beneath the wreckage. Both cars were badly damaged. The Whaley-Overton ambulance and the car of Undersheriff Owen Rex, which reached the scene a short time after the crash in response to a telephone call from Mrs. Hampf, took the injured to Mercy hospital. Coroner E. J. Overton, who with Sheriff James E. Croake and Undersheriff Rex investigated; said he would conduct a further investigation before determing whether an inquest will be necessary. «b»Funeral Is Tuesday«/b» Mrs. Peters, formerly Mayme Urbanowski was born in Chicago Sept. 15, 1891 and was married at St. Mary's church, Janesville, Sept. 14, 1920. Members of the Foresters are to go to the Peters home, 12 miles east on the Ruger avenue road, at 8 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the home and at 10:30 in St. Mary's church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
