Howard O. ''Hap'' Beach, 90, of Duluth, died peacefully, Monday, September 15, 2003 in his and his daughter and son-in-law's home where he had been living the past two years. He was born March 3, 1913 in Kirksville, Missouri to Guy and Daisy Beach. A carpenter working on the family home gave him the name ''Hap'' when he was two years old because he was 'Happy go lucky.' He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Dairy Industry where he helped develop Maytag Blue Cheese. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II and worked as a purchasing agent for the Army in Prince Rupert, B.C. He married Velma McKinney December 31, 1933. They owned and operated a beauty shop in Ottumwa, Iowa in the early 1940's and he was proud of the fact that he was one of the few men who ''did hair'' at that time. In the early years of their marriage, he and Velma opened their home to Velma's younger siblings, Norma, Bobbi and Denver. Hap was a self employed salesman for soft ice cream equipment for central and southeastern Iowa. When Velma died in 1969, he semiretired to be both mother and father to his daughter, Dana. He married Maxine Threlkeld, May 18, 1974. Hap was famous for his many stories, which he was all too willing to tell. Many of these dealt with his life as a youngster on his parents' Kirksville, Missouri farm. He had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh and tell stories and reminisce about his long and happy life. He enjoyed his family and friends, golf and Iowa football and basketball. He especially enjoyed being a world traveler which was fitting because he was larger than life. No one was more loving and supportive of his children and grandchildren than Hap. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ottumwa, Iowa where he made many life long friendships in the ''Mariners Club''.
Hap was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Daisy Beach; first wife, Velma; second wife, Maxine; a brother, Louis Beach and sister, Lenora ''Toots'' Tully.
Survivors include son, Dan (Melinda) Beach of Ojai, Calif.; daughter, Dana (Jay) Litman of Duluth; sister, Zelpha Baird of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Dugan and Jason Beach both of San Francisco, Calif.; Megan Beach of Ojai, Calif.; Miriam Hanson of Roatan, Honduras; Adam Hanson of Ventura, Calif.; step grandchildren, Tiffany, Sam and Dan Litman all of Duluth.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 3 p.m. Thursday, September 25 to celebrate Hap's life at Dana and Jay Litman's home, 5224 Washburn Road with burial in Ottumwa, Iowa at a later date. Hap would have liked any contributions to go to Alzheimer's research. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555
