- Harry McKinney, 91, Brimson, died Monday, August 28, 2017 at his home.
He was born October 29, 1925 to Roy Sr. and Florence "Flossie" (Newton) McKinney in Fairbank Township (Brimson). He attended Petrell School #55 completing the eighth grade and then began working in the lumber industry as a teenager for Fred Hall and in later years for himself.
During WWII, Harry served in the US Army in Germany and surrounding countries with the 353rd Infantry & 118th Signal Corp. After the war, Harry returned to Brimson and worked in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1988 after having worked sixteen years for the St. Louis County Highway Department.
He married Ruth Simola on October 29, 1948 in Duluth and had celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary last year.
Harry enjoyed the outdoors, working in the garage building sauna stoves, and his family and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help "anyone" who may have needed it no matter how big or small the job.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth, a brother Roy Jr., and sisters, Madelia "Mickey" Johnson, and Leota Johnson.
Harry is survived by his two daughters, Shirley Radke of Makinen and Brenda (Steve) Schnurrer of Brimson; grandchildren, Annette (Gerald) Wilton and Heather (Joel) Wagner of Brookston, Shannon (Steve) Rohlman of Marionville, MO, Justin (Monica) Radke of Bovey, Joseph Schnurrer of Brimson, and Dave (Kayla) Schnurrer of Owatonna; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Gerry McKinney of Brimson; brother-in-law Robert Johnson of White Bear Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.
