    • Motorist Escapes Death as Passenger Train Hits Auto And Carries Him 400 Feet

Joseph Bealckus, 432 Forty-sixth street, Rock Island, experienced a miraculous escape from death shortly after 1 o'clock this afternoon when the small touring car he was driving was completely demolished by an east-bound passenger train in Moline. The accident occurred at the Sixteenth street crossing.

Bealckus received several scratches about the face and shoulders, a laceration of the scalp and numerous body bruises.

Bealckus' car was picked up bodily by the speeding engine and carried for about 400 feet before the train could be brought to a stop. Bealckus was unable to escape from the car an dwas taken with it until just before the train halted, when he was thrown headlong into the cinders along the cinders along the right of way.

G.F. Coburn, Moline policeman who guards the crossing, and a number of eye witnesses, stated that Coburn was standing in his accustomed place in the center of the street with arms outstretched to halt traffic when Baelckus turned onto the tracks from Fourth avenue. The latter was traveling westward before he turned. Coburn claimed Bealkus disregarded the signal and drove onto the tracks before throwing on his brakes, stopping the machine squarely in the trains's path.

Others who witnessed the smashup were Kenneth Waller, 2418 Thirteenth street, and Leonard Nelson, 2311 Twelfth street, both of Moline.
