John N. Webster died at the residence of his brother, F. E. Webster, where he and his wife were stopping for a few days, of chronic disease of the heart. He was taken ill Tuesday night. Wednesday he was very much easier an no one anticipated the end which came suddenly at about 11 o'clock Wednesday evening. While he had not been in the best of health all winter he was around as usual and was on the streets Tuesday. His sudden death was a great shock to the community.
Mr. Webster came to this town with his parents in 1855, being born in Vermont March, 1841. HE has lived here ever since and was one of our best respected citizens and neighbors, ever ready to help the needy with substantial things and with sound advice to all that came for counsel. He was a true and loyal member of the G.A.R. and the I.O.O.F. and it can be well said that this place and those orders are better for his having lived in them. His death to the writer was a personal loss, as he was one of our first friends in 1865 and has continued so up to the present time without a break in its pleasant relations, and when vexed and troubled with the cares of life a quiet talk with John would seem to clear the mists away.
During the Civil war Mr. Webster was a member of Company E, 32nd Wisconsin Infantry, enlisting as a private Aug. 9, 1863, and was mustered out as sergeant June 12, 1865. He leaves two sons, Preston Webster of Pine Grove and James C. Webster of Portland, Oregon, and one daughter, Mrs. Gustin of Pine Grove, by his first wife and a wife and three step children, Thomas and James Berto and Mrs. Wood of Pine Grove, two brothers, C. E. of Almond and F. E. of this place and one sister, Mrs. Pearson, to mourn the loss of a true father, husband, and brother. He will be buried Saturday and it is expected that the Odd Fellows will have charge, assisted by G.A.R.
