Jerry Szyszka, 76, died Thursday, July 16, 2015, in Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 20,
at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Norway, with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church parish center.
Jerry was born April 13, 1939, to Jerome and Florence Schnurrer Szyszka in Minnesota. On March 8, 1969, he married Sue Rocarek. From 1961 to 1981, he ran the Norway Locker.
Jerry was a member of the Norway Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Sue; children, Shannon Schmidt and Jennifer (Jeff) Furman and John and Scott Szyszka; grandchildren, Macey, Riley and Sydney Schmidt, Samantha (Mitch) Becker, Taylor, Max and Ally Furman, and Zoey and Peyton Szyszka; great- granddaughters, Avery, Paisley and Emma Becker; brother, Walter (Elizabeth) Szyszka; brothers-in-law, Edward (Barbara) Rocarek Sr. and John (Sue) Rocarek; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Dewayne.
Jerry was a great father and grandpa. He loved fishing, hunting and the Green Bay Packers, but most of all, watching his grandchildren play their sports.
