- George Barnes, Colusa County Educator, Dies
Colusa, Colusa Co., -- Final rites will be conducted at 11 AM tomorrow in the McNary Memorial Chapel for George P. Barnes, 83, retired teacher and elementary school principal.
Barnes, who died Thursday night in the Colusa Memorial Hospital, retired in 1947 as principal of the Colusa Elementary School. He was a teacher and principal ther for 30 years. He had previously taught in other Colusa County schools, including those of WIlbur Springs, Stonyford, Grimes and Arbuckle.
A native of Butler County, Kansas, Barnes spent his early liofe in Sutter County. He was a graduate of Sutter High School and obtained his degrees in education at the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University.
Several years ago Colusa's new intermediate school was dedicated to him.
Barnes was a charter member of the Colusa Lions Club, a 50 year member and past master of Colusa Lodge No. 240 of Masons, a past worthy patron of Veritas Chapter of the Eastern Star, and a member of various educational orginizations.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha; daughters, Mrs. Erlene Bordes and Mrs. Beatrice Brown, both of Sacramento; and brother Elmus Barnes of Oroville, Butte County.
Interment will be in the Sutter, Sutter County, Cemetery with the McNary-Moore Funeral Service directing.
