Donald "Penie"Grunewald, 71, of rural Jeffers died June 12, 2009, at Good Samaritan-Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom.
Services were held Tuesday at La-Canne Family Funeral Home in Windom with Pastor Stephen Norby officiating.
Special music was provided by Colleen Ortmann organist, and Mike Foley, vocalist.
Casket bearers were John Maras, Pete Koep, Richard Nordby, Brandon Carter, Loren Marschel and Keith Scheidt.
Honorary bearers were Jim and Betty Schmitz, Clara and Harold Seberson, and Dale and Linda Gravley.
Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.
Donald "Penie" E. Grunewald was born June 3, 1938, to Ernest and Ethel (Martin) Grunewald in Dale Township of Cottonwood County. He received his early education in country school and later attended Jeffers High School.
Penie worked for Tony Downs in St. James and then the tile factory for five years before going to work at Toro, where he worked until retiring at age 62.
Earlier this month, Penie became a resident of Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom.
Penie was a caregiver for Kaytlin Castro, his "special little girl."
He will be remembered for his favorite saying, "Don't be dumb," playing cards in Heron Lake, fishing, gardening, beers with the boys on Friday nights, going to Jackpot Junction and spending time with his nieces and nephews when they came to visit.
He was preceded in death by his brothers: Ray, Alfred, Frederick, Lyle, Kenny and Dudley Grunewald; and sisters: Deloris, Velda, Joyce and Ethel.
Survivors incldue his two brothers and two sisters: Rich (Karen) Grunewald of Brainerd; Ernest (LaRae) Grunewald and June Horkey, all of Windom; and Norma Renczykowski of Meadowlands; a great-nephew, Ethan Donald Grunewald of Fairmont; his special little girl, Kaytlin Castro of Windom; and very good friend, Susan Albrecht, and her daughters, Melissa and Stacey and their families.
